Best known for its: lavender crepe-like summer flowers, beautiful cinnamon to chestnut exfoliating bark, prolonged flowering, all-season interest, exceptional mildew resistance, fast vigorous growth, early bloomer.
Plant family + type: Lythraceae - medium deciduous summer flowering tree
Origin: United States National Arboretum Introduction . A cross originating in 1972 of L. indica AZUKA DWARF HYBRID X L. fauriei. Selected in 1976 . Introduced in 1987.
Mildew resistance: high
Growth habit: deciduous, upright, dense, multi-stemmed, considered a large shrub or small tree, blooms on new growth
Flower color: light lavender, reported to be lightly scented, prolonged flowering
Foliage: glossy, bronzy new spring growth, dark green in summer
Bark: chestnut to cinnamon-colored, mottled, sinuous, exfoliating
Autumn foliage color: shades of dark red to dull russet orange
Blooming period: summer, autumn
Preferences: full sun, well-drained soils, good air circulation, soil pH: 5.0-6.5
Excellent choice for: long summer flowering accent trees, single specimen trees and grove plantings, small courtyards and patios
