Best known for its: dark coral pink crepe-like summer flowers, good cold tolerance, high mildew resistance, prolonged flowering, attractive exfoliating bark
Plant family + type: Lythraceae - medium deciduous summer flowering tree
Origin: United States National Arboretum Introduction. Originated in 1969 from hybridization of L. indica Dark Red x (L. indica x L. fauriei seedling). Selected in 1973. Introduced in 1987.
Mildew resistance: high
Growth habit: deciduous, upright, multiple-stemmed, broad spreading crown
Flower color: dark coral pink, globose branched panicles, recurrent bloom
Foliage: glossy, dark green, light bronze cast on new growth
Bark: attractive, sinuous, mottled, exfoliating, light sandalwood
Autumn foliage color: dark orange-red to dark purple-red
Blooming period: summer, autumn for 80-100 days
Preferences: full sun, well-drained soils, good air circulation, soil pH: 5.0-6.5
Excellent choice for: specimen, summer flowering accent tree, groves
